It was in the 90′s the Dot.com era when Herman Miller launched the ever popular Aeron.  Some consider the first ergonomic chair and the pioneer of the ergonomic era.

The Chair was designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick after they had created the groundbreaking Equa Chair. Starting with a clean drawing board the two designers began with the thinking “What should a chair do for a person?”  Functions, form and the use of materials all played heavily on the concept of the Aeron.

The two designers came to the draw up a number of key elements that a chair should be.

Functionality

A chair should be able to allow for movement and adjustment. Allowing for support in any position that your job might require. Hence the Aeron Chair has a number of adjustment levers to ensure you are positioned in an ergonomic and comfortable position in your daily work environment, be that at the work or home office.

Ergonomic

Also incorporating good looks the chair should not just sit there. A chair should help serve the human body for healthy positioning as recommended by the ergonomic health society. The body is not meant to sit for long durations and the Aeron serves to improve the position of your body in the sitting position.

Environmental Consideration

When manufacturing the Aeron, the two designers set about establishing a chair that was made to minimise the impact on the environment. How so you may ask? The concept of Herman Miller and the Aeron was to use sparingly the use of natural resources focusing on making a DURABLE long lasting chair that can be easily repaired, the chair can be recycled and easily dissembled if required.

The aeron needs to fit not just the average but allow to fit nearly all people where possible.The Aeron is just that, it comes in 3 different sizes to accomodate leg length and body size.

The design itself was a revolution in work chairs, for the Aeron did not distinguish the title of the user. The Aeron is not padded, nor upholstered with three sizes that remained with the same appearance. The aeron did not look like any other work chair and set about creating something distinct and New. The Aeron had more patents than any other Herman Miller product of its time.

“It was a matter of deliberate design to create a ‘new signature shape’ for the Aeron chair,” was Bill Stumpf’s words. “Competitive ergonomic chairs became look-alikes”.  The Aeron design strategy was about differentiation. It remains one of, if not the most, critical aspects of Aeron’s success.

“The human form is biomorphic, it has no straight lines. Herman Miller and the two designers  designed the chair to be, above all, biomorphic, or curvilinear, as a metaphor of human form in the visual as well as the tactile sense. There is not one straight line to be found on an Aeron chair.”

The Lack of cushions is to serve the need for airflow, and the transparant element of design allows for the flow of moisture, air and light. Making the world and the workplace less opaque. Certainly a revolutionairy step forward in design, the Aeron was designed not to be intrusive.

The design of the Aeron was validated and refined through various research and opinions of experts to ensure the best chair was created. Focus groups soon established that the need for airflow and aeration along with long term comfort as being the main drivers for a new office chair.

Of course the research did not stop there with trials and customer satisfaction tests conducted on many users placing tests against the best work chairs available.

Herman Miller and the designer team ensured that a collaboration of experts were commisioned to provide expert assessment of the Aeron design, with leading ergonomists, physical therapists and orthopedic specialists evaluating the chair’s fit and motion. Also important to test and assess the benefit and ease of its adjustments.

The design team conducted anthropometric studies across the country, using a specially developed instrument to calculate everything from popliteal (back of the knee) height to forearm length.

Pressure mapping and a host of tests were performed to determine weight distribution, heat disapation. One could say NASA like testing.
