Steelcase Amia chair review

The Amia™ Chair from SteelCase may not be the most sophisticated nor glamorous design yet is ultra comfortable and effective. Stack it up against a $1200 chair like that of Herman Miller’s embody you get the Amia™ Chair for half the price. Simple designed no bells and whistles, most importantly it offers real support and is really comfortable.

The Likes:
Lean and effective, this chair strips the stuff you don’t actually need as a comparison to the higher end big brothers and competitors. Most importantly it keeps the freedom to move, the comfort, support functionality and colour range. The essentials are kept this is the lean mean Amia machine which offers an affordable office and home office chair. The simple design is a like, the back support using the Livelumber system is a like. So your back will love you for it as will your bank balance.

The not so likes:
This is a very simple design, unsophisticated in the true sense so don’t expect to get raptuous applause from the design critics in the office. Its not the newest most exiting chair out there either. It does have it’s own personality which makes this chair a like when push comes to shove.

Conclusion:
Not an eye opener or head turner, this chair is less glamorous then many, most importantly the big plus which is ultimately the most important to us is the comfort and ergonomics are fantastic

Made to be adjusted to your bodies needs.

Highly adjustable this is a very flexible chair. So adjustable, even the  LiveLumbar system can be moved up and down the back of the chair. This will suit almost every BODY

Other adjustments include:

Adjustable Seat Depth — Not all People fit  into average body sizes. Torsos as well as leg lengths and people’s height may vary. This makes Amia’s adjustable seat depth accommodates different body shapes for long-term comfort. It also works to actually keep your legs comfortable while you’re sitting. It takes pressure off your thighs, which increases circulation, and it has advanced cooling technology to make sure you don’t sweat or get overheated in the chair.

Back Tension — Adjust the amount of resistance – or “push back” – to your preference to help maintain your back’s natural curve. Amia conforms to your specifications.

Height, Depth, Width, and Pivot Arms — Arms telescope in and out, move forward and back, pivot and adjust up and down so you can find a natural position that comfortably supports the wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck.

Amia™ is a chair with a secret. Beneath the Amia chair’s upholstery, inside its sleek backrest, there’s a form of a unique comfort system called LiveLumbar™ technology. You may not see it, but you’ll certainly feel it. As you sit in the chair, an adjustable LiveLumbar™ zone flexes with your every move, for consistent ergonomic support for your lower back. Hour after hour, day after day.

With additional comfort features like 4-way adjustable arms, adjustable seat depth and a flexible front seat edge, Amia keeps you feeling good 24/7. It’s a chair for every day, that’s not your everyday chair. The Amia™ chair was designed by the Steelcase Design Studio in collaboration with industrial designer, Thomas Overthun of IDEO. A very similar collaboration between Steelcase and IDEO resulted in the best selling Leap® chair in 1999 and the Leap WorkLounge in 2001.

The Amia chair’s shared origin with these products includes the ergonomic principles of Alive Seating™ technology, which first appeared in the Leap chair. Alive™ Seating technology supports natural movement of the body, and led to the Amia chair’s LiveLumbar™ feature.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

It was the year 1912 when Steelcase began its operations as “The Metal Office Furniture Company”. Situated  in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Steelcase was founded by a select group of strongly committed people with integrity and with a desire and philosophy of doing the right thing for their customers,  business partners, associates, employees, and neighbors.

These principles became the base and foundation of Steelcase. These guiding principles have been passed on from decade to decade. Steelcase contributes their success through their employees. “Our employees are our greatest asset and living these values is at the core of all that we do, just as it was in the past. ” steelcase.com

It was in 1914 that Steel case was granted its first patent for a steel wastebasket . This innovation at the time was the result for a need and a safety undertaking. At the time wastebaskets were made of straw and posed a very serious fire hazard in the office. Evolving further this concept was the introduction of metal desks. Creating Steelcase’s drive for design of office product and service innovations ever since.

Steelcase’s pioneered the solution concept to create a portfolio of furniture designed for three cornerstone elements. These elements underpin the design needs of an office environment and are major factors for design concepts, being interior architecture, technology and furniture.  Steelcase became the name in 1954 and later transferred its holding status to become a publicly listed company in 1998

Steelcase is a global company distributing worldwide through a distribution chain of over 650 dealers.
