Collaborating with leading designers.
From the beginning in 1938 Hans Knoll commenced with a passion and slowly established a number of impressive designs and brought together some leading designers. In 1943 the hiring of a Florence Schust, created a vibrant atmosphere for smart ideas from a young designer who’d worked with European masters. It was the year 1946 Hans married Florence and Florence Knoll became a prominent partner in their business, creating exclusive furniture to a gold standard, installing design principles, and attract internationally renowned designers to work with and sell their creations through Knoll.
Florence Knoll’s belief in “total design” – embodying architecture, interior design, textiles, graphics, manufacturing, advertising and presentation – and her exercise of design principles in solving space issues were departures from the regular practice in the 1950s, but were quickly accepted and remain widely used today. Florence was recognised for her exceptional contributions to architecture and design, Florence Knoll was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts’ prestigious 2002 National Medal of Arts.
